Grab a Bike in Groningen

Tucked away near the German border in the north-eastern corner of the Netherlands, Groningen uses its isolated position to forge its own distinct character. The young student population attending the 17th-century University of Groningen complements the historic architecture and famous Dutch canals.

The skyline is dominated by the magnificent Martinitoren (Martini Tower) that overlooks the Grote Markt (Main Square). Many buildings showcase Groningen’s merchant history and the centre features regular food markets such as the Vismarkt and Grote Markt.

Groninger Museum has one of the finest modern art exhibitions in Northern Europe and Oosterpoort plays host to cultural events from around the world. Students play a role in defining modern Groningen, giving this city a reputation for a vibrant nightlife.

Its one of the best cities in The Netherlands, but not manay people know it. Kind of small Amsterdam. Old buildings, city center surrounded by a canal and brdiges. Great shopping, eating drinking. Pub, bars Clubs stay open to the morning light (longest in the Netherlands). lots of good student activity. Great museums as well.

Groningen is beautiful, we were lucky to have visited when the fairground was in town which kept the teenager children entertained. We also visited a few climbing centres while here. Staff at the cafes, pubs and restaurants were all very friendly and helpful. I would definitely visit again.

Groningen can seriously surprise you with it's beauty if you visit in right weather which will enable you to explore all it has to offer. We found our timing just right during our visit of mid/end May. It has a very joyous vibe, well planned infrastructure, multicultural cuisine, easy local conveyance, great connectivity with Amsterdam. Students from various walks of the world makes it even more vibrant and energietic. The unique 'forum' building, University of Groningen and it's widely spread out yet classic campuses, beatiful streets, Grote market, clock tower and central garden will be remembered for a long time.

Groningen is a beautiful city , I would prefer it to Amsterdam . It is a nice size, there's loads to see and do. The Groninger Museum always has terrific exhibitions and the building itself is amazing. The Ship Museum is excellent also . There is a lovely ambience with many cosy cafes and bars and great eateries such as the Drei Gezusters. We had great takeaway food at the Vis Markt , the Kibbeling is very tasty and the portions everywhere are generous. As it is a University city , there is a lively student atmosphere, We walked everywhere as everything is accessible. It is a wonderful spot for a city break.

The one-bedroom apartment on the first floor was lovely - really comfortable with high quality furnishings, excellent shower and good kitchen area. The bed was really comfortable and the apartment had everything we needed for a one-week stay in Groningen.. It was 5 minutes' walk from the railway station and a couple of minutes' walk in to the city centre. Groningen is a fantastic city with lots of great museums, restaurants and things to see - and for running fans, a Parkrun!

It was just a little paradise. Everything was so comfortable, including the good blanket. In the Netherlands they think in the summer you do not need a blanket, no matter what the temperature, and in this hotel they gave the most qualitative blanket which was just perfect. The room is big, bathroom spacy, staff friendly and helpful - the best coffee for free as much as you want (and in ceramic cups). In sum, the best place to stay. I could have spend there much longer!

Brand new hotel in the middle of the city. The hotel is very contemporary and nicely decorated. The staff at front desk, restaurant and bakery are very hospitable. The first morning we missed breakfast so ordered some (freshly made) sandwiches at the bakery. In the evening we had a superb meal with Dutch ingredients/recipes with a modern twist. We will surely book this hotel for our next stay in Groningen.

The hotel was located in a quiet corner of Groningen old city. It is a former monastery that is surrounded by gardens and within walking distance of the Martini Tower and the old town. I really enjoyed my room that had a great view of the garden. It was spacious and comfortable and had a great bathroom attached. I also enjoyed the minibar which was included. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

The location is great, good atmosphere with many young people around. The room was quite big, new bathroom, breakfast was really good /good choice. I used the P+R Kardinge from where the bus takes 6 minutes to the station, situated 400 m away from the hotel. City centre was a 5-minutes-walk away, a big choice of different restaurants nearby.

Breakfast was standard fare, Continental choices, cooked options etc and fine for a buffet style, but on the pricy side. Hotels in Groningen are never 'cheap' so relatively good value for the city, well/conveniently located for the centre but parking expensive.
